Last Week's Findings

Last week - July 17 and 19 - I went to the Sifton Bog and Springbank Park area.  It was nice, warm not humid, 23c.  Not many birds at the bog....Robins, Grackles and some singing White-throated Sparrows.  I also saw some Green Frogs.

Checking out some Ponds in West London

Sifton Bog / Hyde Park Drainage Pond

Very nice day, high of 15, sunny.  Went for a walk in Sifton Bog.  It was quiet.  I heard a Baltimore Oriole, there were lots of Red-winged Blackbirds, Grackles, and Robins.
I also went to the Hyde Park Drainage Pond to see what was there.  Again very quiet.  There was one Bufflehead, some Song Sparrows, Field Sparrows, Downy Woodpeckers, Brown-headed Cowbirds, and Cardinals.
The water lilies are just starting to come up.

Sifton Bog Check

Sifton Bog, ESA, London, Ontario                         6c, overcast, rain

I haven't been to Sifton Bog since September 2017.  With the snow gone....can access the bog now.  I walked the boardwalk this morning.  A light rain was coming down.  It was fairly quiet.  I got to the viewing platform.  There are a pair of Canada Geese that have a nest right in front of the platform.  There were a pair of Mallards, too.

On the way back, a White-throated Sparrow was singing.  It stayed long enough to get some photos.

Very dreary looking right now but in a month or so it will be all green!

The moss was a bright green in the Spring and early Summer.  Now it's turning a nice red.

Happenings at Sifton Bog

Sifton Bog (ESA), London, Ontario
Sunny, warm, 24 degrees, high of 27, feeling like 30. Walking at the beginning of the bog, the swamp is just mud now.  Nothing much around there.  At the actual bog pond, I noticed the pond lilies are finished.  I heard Green Frogs and Song Sparrows.

This damselfly below was so tiny.  With the bright sun, the blue at the top of the abdomen caught my eye.  I really cropped this picture, so the colour is not good.  It looked blue at the head part, and the wings were clear.

The flower below was in the peat mat close to the pond.  This is the only one I saw and it was very small.
